Diabetes

Diabetes is a chronic medical condition that occurs when the body cannot properly regulate blood sugar (glucose) levels. There are several types of diabetes, with the most common being Type 1 and Type 2.

  • Type 1 Diabetes: This type is usually diagnosed in children and young adults. It occurs when the body's immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. People with Type 1 diabetes need to take insulin to survive.
  • Type 2 Diabetes: This is more common and often develops in adulthood. In Type 2 diabetes, the body either doesn't produce enough insulin or the cells ignore the insulin. It is often associated with lifestyle factors such as obesity, lack of physical activity, and poor diet. Management may involve lifestyle changes, oral medications, and sometimes insulin.
  • Gestational Diabetes: This type occurs during pregnancy and can increase the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes later in life.

Common symptoms of diabetes include increased thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, and blurred vision. It's important to diagnose and manage diabetes early to prevent complications such as heart disease, kidney problems, and nerve damage.
