Blood Pressure
Blood pressure is the force exerted by the blood against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps it around the body. It is measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg) and is expressed as two values: systolic pressure over diastolic pressure.
- The higher number, representing the pressure in the arteries when the heart beats and pumps blood.
- The lower number, representing the pressure in the arteries when the heart is at rest between beats.
Systolic Pressure:
Diastolic Pressure:
- Age: Blood pressure tends to increase with age.
- Gender: Men may have a higher risk of developing high blood pressure.
- Family History: A family history of hypertension can increase the risk.
- Physical Activity: Regular physical activity can help maintain a healthy blood pressure.
- Diet: A diet high in sodium and low in potassium may contribute to high blood pressure.
- Weight: Being overweight or obese can increase the risk of hypertension.
- Smoking and Alcohol Consumption: Both smoking and excessive alcohol intake can raise blood pressure.
- Stress: Chronic stress can contribute to elevated blood pressure.
